A few weeks ago, a customer brought me a photo of a model who had attended the famous Met Gala.

I was dazzled by the amazing dress she was wearing, an exclusive Harris Reed design.

The Met Gala, known for its glamour and luxury, always inspires trends and sparks the imagination. In 2024, the theme of the Met Gala is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening FashionIt's basically an ode to nature," acknowledged Andrew Bolton, chief curator of the Costume Institute, "and that's precisely what I'm passionate about creating.

The Challenge: Create a Met Gala Inspired Shawl

My client wanted a shawl that captured the essence of the dress she had seen at the gala, something unique and spectacular that she could wear to a special event. She told me about the details she loved: the colours, the patterns and the overall elegance of the dress. It was then that I knew I had an exciting project on my hands.

Step 1: Inspiration and Conceptualisation

First, we sat down together and analysed the photo of Harris Reed's dress.

We talked about the elements he liked the most: the colour scheme, the bold design and the unique details.

From that conversation, I began to draw some preliminary sketches. I showed her several options, each capturing a part of the dress but adapted for a shawl. I wanted to make sure that each aspect reflected her vision and the elegance of the event she would be attending.

Step 2: Sketch and Approval

After reviewing the sketches, my client decided on a specific design that combined touches of gold and silver, with a flowing and elegant pattern. This design not only had to be visually stunning, but also comfortable and easy to wear. Once she was completely satisfied with the final sketch, we prepared for the next phase: painting.

Step 3: Hand Painting

Silk is a wonderful canvas for painting. With the design approved, I started working on the shawl..

Each brushstroke required precision and an eye for detail, ensuring that the colours blended perfectly and the flowing pattern came to life. The silk absorbed the paint in a way that only this fabric can, creating a sheen and depth that makes each piece truly unique.

Step 4: Making the shawl

Once the design was painted and dried, I proceeded to make the shawl. I wanted it to be light and elegant, perfect for any fancy event. The silk moved with a fluidity that added a touch of grace every time my client moved.

The Result: A Unique and Personalised Shawl

The result was a shawl that not only captured the essence of the Met Gala gown, but also reflected my client's personality and unique style. Every time she wears it, she carries with her a piece of art, something exclusive that no one else has. This shawl is not just a garment, it is an expression of luxury and exclusivity.
